Creating a self-tuning Oracle 11g Database


The advent of Oracle provides a mechanism for the automation of Oracle SGA tuning.  Because almost every Oracle parameter can now be changed with an “alter system” command, the Oracle professional now has the ability to dynamically change all areas of the Oracle System Global Area (SGA).

This exciting new feature lays the foundation for creating a self-tuning Oracle database. It is imperative that the Oracle professional understand the tools and techniques that are used to monitor and adjust the size of the SGA RAM regions within the Oracle instance.

This paper is intended to get you started in creating your own self-tuning architecture and shows some of the common techniques used to monitor and automatically change the configuration of Oracle in response to anticipated changes in processing.

This paper is targeted at senior Oracle professionals who already have substantial knowledge of the internal mechanisms for changing the configuration of Oracle.  However, we have tried to place lots of illustrative examples throughout the text and show how you can design a simple self-tuning mechanism.

While the scope of performance tuning is too broad for this small text, we show actual examples of working code and demonstrate how you can easily build mechanisms to self-tune your Oracle database.
