WIDE SCALE  ASM ADOPTIONS  AND LESSONS LEARNED

Over the past decade I have had the privilege of working with many different organizations – large and small, across many industries. One of my most interesting projects was a lead engineering role for the adoption of ASM at a very large organization. Our team planned and supported the deployment of ASM across hundreds of database systems around the globe in this company's data centers.
I am not the only professional who has gained experience with wide-scale ASM deployments like this. By reaching out on mailing lists and through the IOUG, I have discovered a number of other professionals who have also been involved in large ASM projects.
Most of us are not at liberty to discuss our clients in public – however I was able to have private conversations with many others about the details and challenges of their ASM projects. By aggregating all of our experiences together into this report, I can bring our discussions into the light while respecting our clients' confidentiality.
To be very clear: this paper does not represent recommendations for current or future decisions, and it is not comprehensive industry research. It does represents past decisions and experiences at a handful of medium and large companies with whom I worked or corresponded. I hope that it proves useful to others who have an interest in these technologies.
ABOUT THE COMPANIES
The information in this paper represents 16 different businesses – from the United States, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Switzerland, Australia and Bulgaria. The approximate number of Oracle instances running at each company ranges from 10 to 8000. The companies I talked to were in the non-profit, government, communications, healthcare and finance industries. I talked to more companies in the finance industry than any other.
