Deploying Oracle Databases on
Exadata: Workload Analysis, Unused
Indexes and Compression Benefits
By Jim Czuprynski
The Oracle Database Machine (DBM) and its Exadata Storage Servers
promise significant performance improvements, especially for decision
support systems (DSS) and online analytical processing (OLAP)
application workloads. While there’s little debate about whether DBM can
deliver on these promises, some Oracle DBAs struggle with the best ways
to take advantage of all the DBM’s powerful features. This article outlines
some simple principles and methods to proactively approach an Oracle
database’s transition to DBM and Exadata.
Will Your Database’s Applications Benefit from Exadata Features?
The biggest question, of course, is whether database application workloads
will be able to take advantage of the DBM and its underlying Exadata
storage servers. Fortunately, in the Oracle Database 11gR2 (11.2.0.1)
version of SQL Performance Analyzer, there’s a pretty slick tool that’s
somewhat hidden from view: the ability to simulate an application
workload’s performance within an Exadata environment.
