Physical Ordering of Data: Should You and Can You with ASSM?
Physical Ordering of Data: Should You and Can You with ASSM?Relate methods for determining whether physical ordering is worthwhile in a given case.
Explore whether and how Oracle's ASSM (automated segment space management) affects physical order.
In retrospect Ishould have named the tables naturally, so mwf01_m would be lum_ordered, mwf02_m would be lum_unordered (Locally managedUniform extents Manual aka freelist segment spacemanagement unordered). But I’m not rerunning all the tests and while I’ve donesome minor formatting things to make result sets from sqlplus fit more nicely ondocument pages, I don’t want to get into making the sorts of edits that lead toclaims the results are not from real runs, like missing some of the namechanges. Feel free to use better names if you repeat the tests in yourenvironment. In fact, happily change things all around in search of cornercases and exceptions if you like. I ran a few “just type it in and run it”variations just to make sure my experiments themselves are not some unusualcorner case, but they were by no means exhaustive. Please let me know if youfind your results are significantly different from my results.
